THE SMOKEHOUSE
July 2026 Edition
President’s Message
Members and Friends,
As we move through a very active summer period, I want to provide an update on several initiatives and developments arising from our June General Meeting and subsequent Branch activities.
A number of important discussions took place, including early-stage consideration of future options for a new Branch, ongoing facility improvements, and the expansion of community and fundraising programs.
Branch Development & Facilities
Future New Location Review: The June General Meeting included discussion regarding the possibility of identifying a future location for Branch 29. This matter is strictly exploratory at this time. No decisions have been made. The Executive has been asked only to begin reviewing potential options and assess long-term viability considerations. Members will be updated as any information develops.
Accessibility Improvements – Chair Lift
Installation of the new chair lift is now scheduled and will proceed as planned to improve accessibility within the current building.
A separate discussion examined whether an elevator could be considered as an alternative solution. After review, it has been determined that an elevator installation is not feasible within a commercial retrofit context for the existing structure. The chair lift remains the practical and approved solution.
Catch the Ace
The Catch the Ace initiative continues to develop as an important Branch fundraising program.
Leadership team:
- Chuck Prystupa (Membership Chair)
- Katie Osborne-Howie
- Darlene Murphy
This initiative will play a significant role in supporting Branch operations and member engagement throughout the year.
Poppy Project – Branch 29
Our Branch centennial poppy project continues to grow at an exceptional pace, with more than 10,500 knitted and crocheted poppies now completed by volunteers.
The next phase involves attaching poppies to netting panels that will form commemorative displays. We are calling all community members to come out and help! These “poppy blankets” will be used at the Cenotaph during Remembrance Day services and at various community Centennial events throughout the fall.
Poppy Work Bees
Beginning Wednesday, July 8, weekly work bees will be held Wednesdays in July:
- July 8
- July 15
- July 22
- July 29
Time: 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Location: Branch 29
No prior experience is required. Volunteers only need basic knot-tying ability. These sessions are intended to be social, collaborative, and reflective of traditional community “work bees,” similar to quilting and knitting circles of earlier generations. All members and community volunteers are welcome and we have A LOT of fun!
Saturday BBQ’s
Weekly Saturday BBQs continue rain or shine. These remain an important social and fundraising activity for the Branch and are well supported by members and the wider community.
Communications & Website
The Branch website and social media platforms have been updated and improved under the capable coordination of Chuck Prystupa. This work has strengthened and improved the Branch’s digital presence and improved communication with members and the public. We thank him for this essential service.
National Legion Centennial Recognition
While Branch 29 marks its own 100th anniversary, it is also important to recognize the 100th Anniversary of The Royal Canadian Legion nationally.
To mark The Royal Canadian Legion’s centenary, the National Legion is introducing a new digital experience that invites viewers to explore, learn, and connect with 100 years of service brought vividly to life. This dynamic interactive website showcases the milestones, memories, and moments that shaped our story, and the vision driving the Legion’s next 100 years.

Membership Growth & National Update
For the first time in 13 years, The Royal Canadian Legion now has more than 300,000 members, a milestone reached at the end of April during its centenary year following the addition of a record 81,600 new members in the first four months.
During the Dominion Executive Council (DEC) Spring Meeting in Ottawa on April 25th, Dominion Command leadership noted that growing membership in volunteer organizations remains a significant challenge. The recent reversal of long-term decline has been described as a notable and encouraging achievement for the organization.
This renewed growth reflects increased engagement across Canada and reinforces the importance of continued participation at the Branch level.

Closing Remarks
Branch 29 continues to advance multiple initiatives simultaneously—balancing facility needs, community programming, fundraising efforts, and commemorative projects.
Thank you to all volunteers, members, and supporters whose ongoing commitment ensures the continued strength and relevance of our Branch.
