POPPY CAMPAIGN

September 21, 2024

Dear Comrades,

The Royal Canadian Legion Br. 29 Poppy Committee will be conducting their annual campaign commencing Friday October 25th. Poppy boxes will be placed at local businesses starting from that date thru to Monday Nov.11th. Last year over $25,000.00 was raised and we have donated over $18,000.00 to help Veterans and promote Youth Education this year.

The Poppy Fund is the Legion’s way of remembering the DEBT WE OWE TO THOSE WHO SACRIFICED SO MUCH.

We will be having our members canvassing at local business this year. There will be a sign-up sheet on the notice board at the Branch, and I ask all members to consider volunteering for a shift.

Member donations can be mailed to the above address, cheques, cash may be dropped off at Branch #29.  Receipts for income tax will be prepared and mailed out to those donating $5.00 or more.

If you have any questions on the campaign or on purchasing wreaths phone the Branch number shown above.

President’s message

We have had an unexpected change in the Executive at Branch 29 Legion. Don MacLeod has resigned as President due to personal reasons. Roy Haggart 1st Vice President has stepped up as President, Earl MacDonald has stepped to 1st Vice President and Barry Humphrey has Stepped to 2nd Vice President.

We would like to express our gratitude to Don for his leadership as President over the past couple of years and wish him well going forward.

July is coming to an end and the weather has been a mix of very heavy rain and gorgeous sunny hot days. Welcome to Ontario.

During the month of June, the Bylaw Enforcement Dept. for the County of Brant received some complaints about the noise on the patio. The noise originated from our Saturday afternoon music on the Patio 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Bylaw Dept. due to the complaints advised we were in violation of the County Noise Bylaw and would need to stop “all” outdoor music. This was then tied to our extended outdoor patio License.

We are aware of the residential nature of the neighbourhood and its relationship with the Branch.

We apologize to our neighbours and attempt at all times to monitor activity at the Branch so as not to disturb anyone.

It is our intention to organize a neighbourhood meeting at the Branch late September to discuss any concerns our neighbours may have and work collectively to a resolution of same.

July has been a busy month with BBQ’s slowly coming back, a pool tournament, Trivia and a couple of Bands indoors. All well attended

June Smokehouse

President’s message

Hello everyone,

Another month has come and gone. We are officially at the start of summer. I would like to remind everyone we have our Bi-Laws meeting on June 12 at 730pm. These are very important as we need to bring them up to Ontario Command standards and update any branch regulations. That will be on June 12 at 730.

We were busy in May. We had some celebrations of life and some bands playing.

We had our first mothers day Breakfast. We had over 40 people attend. Thanks to all that helped make this a success. Special thanks to all the Companies that donated to our event.

We had our Branch pool tournament Congratulations to Jim W. and Roy H.

We had our 300 club draw. Congratulations to all of you that won money. List to follow later. Congratulations to John M for winning the $1500

We had Trivia that was well attended.

Upcoming events in June

Saturday, June 1st, Annual Market. 10am-4pm. There will be 40 vendors selling their items. We will be selling Burgers, Sausages and Hotdogs to name a few things. Special Thanks to Michelle P for doing a lot of hard work for this event. A fun afternoon for all.

Saturday, June 1st, Trysted Sisters. 7-10pm. There is a $5 cover. Classic Rock. Funk ‘n groove to today’s top 40’s – Ready to Rock?

Saturday, June 8th. First BBQ of the season. Unfortunately, we will not be having music outside. More on that at our General Meeting.

Wednesday, June 12th. 7:30pm By-Laws meeting and General Meeting. We have important business to discuss so please plan on attending.

Saturday, June 15th. Joey J pool tournament. Registration is at 1130 and play starts at 12. This is an open 8-Ball pool tournament. It is a blind draw doubles tournament. We are trying to get these tournaments started up again. Since Covid we have been unable to run these events.

Wednesday, June 19th. 7:30 pm. Ayr-Paris Band playing next to the Patio. They are awesome and well attended. We hope to see everyone there.

Thanks for attending and supporting your Branch,

Donald MacLeod

President Br. 29 Paris

May Smokehouse

President’s message

Hi everyone,

I hope you had a wonderful April and looking forward to nicer May weather.

April was a good month for us. We finished up our last Friday dinner. We Had the biggest crowd yet for Trivia. We also had a pool tournament which was won by Roger H.

The 300 club tickets are all sold. The early bird was drawn on April 20th. Congratulations to Eliza C. for being the winner. The final draw will be held on May 18th.

On to upcoming events.

Sunday, May 12th. Mother’s Day Breakfast. 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon. Scrambled eggs, sausage, peameal bacon, brown beans, toast, coffee, tea, and pastries. Free pancakes for the kids.

Wednesday, May 15th. General Meeting, 7:30 p.m. At the meeting we will be discussing our ByLaws. They have not been approved since 2014 and Command wants them updated. There have been suggestions on some changes. These need to be approved at this meeting. A copy of the ByLaws is available at the Branch. If you would like to have input and a vote on the changes but can’t attend you are able to email me or any other Executive Committee member. We will read out your concern or support and will cast your vote for you. The only concern about an item to be changed is the raising of the Brach ability to spent up to $2000 without General membership approval. We are not doing this to circumvent the memberships right, to approve any bigger amounts of money to be spent. This is being done because we have not updated our ByLaws for 10 years. It went to $1000 from the current $500 a few years ago and now sits at $2000. This is being suggested by Ontario Command, as the cost of items that we may need to purchase has continued to rise. A plumber is about $300 an hour and would only be there less than 2 hours before the $500 would be reached. Add parts and we could be holding up the item for 3 months as that is how often we have a General Meeting. But you the Membership gets the Final vote. So come out and hear all the preposed amendments to the current Bylaws. If you can’t make it to the Branch, but would like a hard copy of the ByLaws, you can do so by calling the Branch or emailing any of our executive.

Friday, May 17th. Trivia Night. 7:00 p.m.

Saturday, May 18th. Branch 8-Ball Tournament. You must be a member to play.

Saturday, May 18th. 300 Club Draw. Starting at 1:00 p.m. Come out and see if you have won a prize or just to cheer someone else to the win. Remember all funds raised by this draw go to support youth sports in Paris.

Saturday, June 1st. Spring Bazaar. There will be food available at this event.

Saturday, June 8th. BBQ season opens. If you would like to help out this summer please email or call us and leave a message.

Thanks,

Donald MacLeod
